Herb Caen was a Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist, humorist, and reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle. In 1953 he was named the "most influential man in San Francisco," by the National Society of Newspaper Columnists. In 1956 he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, where he served until his death in 1997. He was a member of the San Francisco Parks and Recreation Commission from 1960 to 1964, and was a member of the California State Parks Foundation Advisory Board from 1968 to 1985.
